Lincoln East Rotary Club awards scholarships | Neighborhood Extra

Lincoln East Rotary Club has awarded $1,000 scholarships to four Lancaster County high school graduating seniors who plan to go to college in Nebraska.

Students are selected for the award based on several factors including good academic performance, being a leader in their school, community service and financial need. Letters of recommendation are considered during the evaluation of students’ applications.

Committee Chair Lillie Larsen and members David Caudy and Dennis Schmidt select students to be recommended to receive the scholarships. The goal of the Rotarians is to help students cover the costs of their education for the 2021-22 academic year.

Florida plans to end extra jobless benefits next month | Breaking News

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Florida is joining a growing list of Republican-led states that plan to end participation in a federal program that gave an extra $300 per week in benefits to the unemployed during the pandemic.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity announced Monday that the state will withdraw from the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program effective June 26.

State labor officials said private-sector employment increased by 18,800 jobs last month and more than 460,000 online job postings were made throughout the state for job seekers.

Extra unemployment benefits may come. Some never got the last round

Democrats are poised to send more unemployment benefits to laid-off workers. Meanwhile, some workers are still waiting on the last tranche, authorized months ago.

A $900 billion Covid relief bill signed Dec. 27 extended jobless benefits to March 14 and raised them by $300 a week.

In Wisconsin, officials estimate self-employed and gig workers won’t get that extra aid until at least April 21 — almost four months later.
